Introducing the Negotiation Guide for Graduate Students and Postdocs!

Receiving a job or internship offer is an exciting time, but it can also feel a little overwhelming if you are unsure of the next steps.  The graduate student and postdoc team at Career Services is happy to share our brand new Negotiation Guide for Graduate Students and Postdocs!  This guide complements our other popular guides, the Interviewing Guide for Graduate Students and Postdocs and the Informational Interviewing Guide for Graduate Students and Postdocs.  This new resource is designed to assist any student who is interested in negotiation tips – whether you already have an offer or want to prepare for future opportunities

The negotiating advice in this guide is relevant for full-time job offer in almost all career industries and provides relevant information to all students – both graduate and undergraduate.  The guide offers helpful tips using real life scenarios that you might encounter during a job offer negotiation.  It is impossible to predict how every employer across industries and career fields will approach job offers and negotiations – they will do it differently! This guide is not meant to prepare you for every situation, but rather to give you best practices and resources to encourage you to take the opportunity to negotiate. With some careful planning and research as laid out in this guide, we hope that you will feel more optimistic about advocating for yourself, so that you will go into your next negotiation with confidence!

In addition to the negotiation guide, graduate students have free access to online resources which include tools on negotiating.  Master’s students can access the Beyond Graduate School platform, and PhDs and postdocs can utilize the PhD Training Platform.

Negotiating is a very individual situation, and so we encourage students with job offers to schedule an appointment or same-day advising appointment with a career advisor for individualized advice.  We look forward to working with you!
