Navigating Investments in the Insurance Industry

Monika Lee, COL ’24, Los Angeles, CA

During my time as a Global Investments Intern at Aflac, I engaged in a multifaceted role that encompassed a range of vital responsibilities within the investment landscape. My daily tasks included overseeing trade activities on behalf of Aflac Global Investments, affording me a comprehensive grasp of investment compliance and the intricate operational workflows of an insurance asset management entity. Through hands-on involvement, I learned to orchestrate breach investigations and adeptly manage reporting processes, fostering my ability to navigate complex compliance scenarios effectively.

A significant aspect of my internship revolved around the analysis of client Investment Management Agreements (IMAs), coupled with the adeptness to liaise with business units for clarification on guidelines when necessary. Moreover, I embarked on an insightful journey to grasp the evolving landscape of investment regulations by monitoring updates from entities such as the NAIC, SEC, Japan FSA, State DOI’s, and CFTC. I also worked closely with the sales team to support client meetings. This endeavor enabled me to cultivate a nuanced understanding of both US and Japan Securities and Derivatives Regulations, particularly as they pertained to the dynamic realm of the insurance industry investment activities.

I am grateful for the invaluable experience I gained during my time at Aflac, as it has not only enriched my understanding of the investment landscape but also allowed me to witness firsthand the interplay of compliance, innovation, and teamwork within a global financial institution. This experience has equipped me with skills and insights that extend far beyond the classroom, contributing significantly to my personal and professional growth. Moreover, I would like to express my gratitude for the support provided by Penn, which made this opportunity possible. I recognize that I would not have been able to immerse myself so thoroughly in the complexities of investment management, engage in meaningful collaboration with industry professionals, or access the wealth of knowledge that Aflac’s environment offered. This experience has truly been a catalyst for my growth, enabling me to embark on a journey of experiential learning that will shape my future endeavors.
