This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work alongside Dr. Julia Gray on her research about international organizations (IOs). These organizations, often operating behind the scenes, play a significant role in global affairs. Throughout the experience, I gained insights into innovative research methods and the fascinating world of IOs. Dr. Gray introduced me to creative ways of gathering information about older and less-documented regional IOs. Together, we developed strategies to uncover hidden details that had been overlooked over time. This taught me the importance of persistence and thinking outside the box when it comes to research.
One of the highlights of my summer research was creating a comprehensive list of secretaries general and their life stories from various African organizations. This wasn’t just about compiling facts; it was about understanding the people behind these organizations and their impact. Their stories provided a deeper understanding of how IOs in Africa have evolved. Nexis Uni became my trusty tool as I navigated the vast sea of information. With access to thousands of articles, I delved into the activities of organizations like the African Union (AU). It was like piecing together a puzzle, each article revealing a new part of the picture. This digital resource was invaluable in uncovering the lesser-known aspects of IOs.
Beyond tools and methods, the guidance of Dr. Gray was a highlight of my experience. Her expertise extended beyond the subject matter; she taught me how to approach research thoughtfully and critically. Learning to ask the right questions became a cornerstone of my summer journey, something I’ll carry with me throughout my academic career. Collaboration was another key aspect of my summer project. Working with my teammates was eye-opening. We realized the importance of standardizing our research methods, which not only kept our work consistent but also allowed us to cross-check findings effectively.
Looking back, this summer wasn’t just about research; it was a voyage of self-discovery and growth. From digging up forgotten histories of organizations to exploring the digital realm for hidden insights, every step was a lesson in curiosity and perseverance. Dr. Gray’s mentorship and the support of my teammates fortified my passion for learning.
As summer comes to an end and the academic year begins, I carry forward the lessons I’ve learned. The world of international organizations is intricate, but armed with innovative research skills and a hunger for knowledge, I’m excited to continue delving into its intricacies. This summer has ignited a lifelong spark of inquiry, and I’m eager to see where my exploration of IOs takes me next.
