My Summer with Investments in Asia

David Liu, WH ’27, Glenwood, MD

During this past summer, I had the unique opportunity to work with Shanghai Weiershuo International Logistics, a supply chain management firm located in China. Going into the summer, I had a core interest in investments and financial services, but also a curiosity about the logistics industry and how global supply chains create such a large impact on our entire international economy. I can confidently say that after my experience, I have a much clearer picture of what work in the supply chain industry looks like, as well as a much broader understanding of the logistics industry in Asia from an investing point of view.

At the start of this internship, I began by familiarizing myself with the ongoing work of the firm and the various departments involved. In doing so, I was able to speak with members of each department spanning operations, supply chain management, sales, finance, and IT. Understanding the responsibilities of each department before focusing primarily within my internship department of investments was important for realizing how my work would fit into the overall functions of the firm.

The majority of my work within investments was tied to researching the supply chain management industry in Asia. At first, I focused specifically on Southeast Asia’s supply chain industry and conducted a thorough industry report and presentation. Among all of the leading players of the various countries in the region, I was tasked with digging deeper into Samudera Shipping Line Ltd—a leading container shipping company listed on the Singaporean Stock Exchange (SGX). My primary project for the firm became creating a comprehensive investment memo on the company, allowing me to construct a presentation detailing the company, its industry, competitive standing, financial standing, and current valuation. Throughout, I was also able to see live M&A processes occur within our firm.

Beyond the technical work I accomplished during this summer, one of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was gaining a global perspective in my field of work. This summer, overall, has deepened my interest in investments and motivated me to look for the complete picture in the work that I do.
