Conducting Computational Research: Learning the Mechanisms Behind Drug Discovery and Building Relationships

Anna Chung, COL ’25, Haddonfield, NJ

This summer, I had the pleasure of working alongside Dr. Kim Sharp in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, continuing my research on protein interactions and their implications in drug discovery. This experience was more than just a continuation of my previous work; it was a transformative journey that deepened my understanding of both the science and the collaborative nature of research.

Under Dr. Sharp’s guidance and with the invaluable support of my lab, I advanced my skills in modeling and computational analysis. My focus was on creating and refining analytical methods to evaluate the binding efficacy of various compounds. This technical work was integral to the research of PhD candidate Andrea Andress Huacachino, who was mentored by Dr. Trevor Penning, highlighting how my contributions supported broader research goals.

However, the summer experience extended beyond technical accomplishments. It was also about the relationships and collaborative spirit that developed within my lab. I had the opportunity to mentor two high school students and an undergraduate, sharing my expertise and learning from their fresh perspectives. Our weekly lab lunches became a cherished tradition where we connected over our research and personal stories, building a supportive community. These interactions underscored the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where ideas could thrive and innovation could flourish.

Reflecting on these past few months, I realize that my summer experience was as much about personal growth and building connections as it was about research. The supportive and collaborative atmosphere in my lab not only enhanced my technical skills but also provided a rich environment for professional and personal development. As I move forward, I will carry with me the knowledge, skills, and memories of a summer that was both professionally rewarding and personally fulfilling.
