This fall, we will be featuring blog posts written by PhD students who participated in Career Services’ Career Exploration Fellowship (CEF), a program that helps doctoral candidates explore their career interests through networking opportunities with advanced degree professionals. Describe your experience working with your host.
My CEF host was Dr. Sheng Gao, a Senior Director at Janssen’s Immunology Translational Sciences. Sheng was great; we met one-on-one every other week, usually to discuss any lingering questions I had following my informational interviews. He listened to what I was interested in, learning more about me and where my skill set lies, and set me up to speak with colleagues that matched. He also pushed me outside my comfort zone and had me meet with someone in a career field that I never even thought about. Even though the CEF program is over, I know that I can reach out to Sheng in the future with any questions.
What did you learn from this opportunity (about yourself, potential career fields, the job search, etc.)?
Going into this opportunity, I knew I wanted to end up in industry after my PhD. I defended my PhD during the CEF program and unfortunately the job market in Philly is pretty tough right now. I learned how important it is to know people, to lean on your network, and to be flexible. Additionally, Sheng helped me think through alternative plans with the goal of eventually transitioning to industry.
How did your CEF experience benefit your future career plans?
The CEF program affirmed my future career plans, clarified important skills needed to succeed in industry, demystified the interview process, and introduced me to many new industry connections. More importantly, it also gave me the confidence to reach out to other individuals, which will allow me to continue to grow my network.
What was the most valuable part of your CEF experience?
The most valuable part of my CEF experience was hearing the different experiences, paths, and advice people had. Prior to the CEF program, I found it difficult to find small biotech companies in the Philly area. The best piece of advice I received from someone I had an informational interview with was to look up colleges’ intellectual property/patent offices to find start-up companies.
Top reason PhD students should apply to the CEF program?
The CEF program is helpful both for students who have a clear career path they want to follow and for those who are still trying to find their path. The informational interviews your host sets up for you are just the beginning, and you gain the confidence in reaching out to others.
