Emma Luo, COL ’26, Basking Ridge, NJ
This past summer, I had the opportunity to intern for Weber Shandwick in Shanghai, China. At Weber Shandwick, I worked with the company’s Nike Team, where I assisted with public relations and communications efforts for Nike. Through this internship, I deepened my understanding of the public relations industry and gained a broader perspective on global media by learning about Chinese news sources and social media platforms. The experience also allowed me to apply the skills I’ve learned in my classes to the industry, and I thoroughly enjoyed contributing to a brand that I’ve been familiar with for many years.
Moreover, I gained valuable insights into the sportswear industry. My internship aligned with the timing for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and I had the chance to contribute to various projects and campaigns related to this. This role also enhanced my Chinese language skills, as I regularly communicated with the team and fellow interns in Chinese. I am particularly grateful for the opportunity to be in Shanghai, as it allowed me to reconnect with my cultural roots and strengthen relationships with family and friends outside of my professional responsibilities.
Overall, this internship has significantly enriched my understanding of both the public relations industry and international media. I’ve expanded my professional and personal perspectives and am eager to apply the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to future opportunities. The experience has also solidified my passion for working in global communications and has inspired me to continue exploring how media and public relations operate across different cultural contexts. I now have a deeper appreciation for the complexities of managing a brand’s image on a global scale. This internship has not only equipped me with practical skills but has also given me the opportunity to work in a new environment.
