Career Success Lessons from the Super Bowl

The Philadelphia EAGLES are Super Bowl champs, one again!! 🦅 They made it look easy, but the road to the big game was not without its challenges, and a coming together of the efforts and talents of a united team. There are many takeaways from witnessing triumph at the highest level that can be accessed and applied in our own lives, especially when it comes to career development. For one, adopting a growth mindset can help us consistently work toward our goals with intention, and provide a framework for resilience and relentless pursuit toward success.

It was no accident for the Eagles to win it all. From the draft to training camp to the ups-and-downs of the season, the steps taken toward their goals were calculated, measured and intentional; and in the face of setbacks, the team used it as fuel, not failure. That is a hallmark of a growth mindset – viewing challenges as opportunities, in which we can learn from setbacks to either adjust our goals as needed, or perhaps more fittingly, adjust our process to get closer to our desired results. Think about the many times and ways we heard the Eagles team and organization profess this growth mindset in the form of pull-quotes: “keep the main thing the main thing”, “you can’t be great without the greatness of others”, “you either win or you learn”, to name a few. Maybe you find yourself struggling to hear back from internship recruiters – a frustrating experience, no doubt. Applying a growth mindset can help you embrace such challenges, learn to adapt your process (new ways to market your skills, more concentrated/focused networking strategies, etc.), and stay motivated in your search, always keeping “the main thing the main thing”. Maybe you are newly employed at a large firm and unsure where to start – focusing on the process instead of the end result can help you visualize how all the little things add up to overall success, and connecting to the “greatness of others” around you can help support and inspire your direction.

Therefore, it is an unwavering belief in our preparation and commitment to achieve our goals that will allow us to execute and unlock our full potential. As Suzanne Ricci writes, these pillars of Planning, Commitment, and Execution are the foundation of a Super Bowl winning team, and are effective measures to approaching career development in which luck is not a strategy. So, whether you are embarking on your first, full-time job opportunity, searching for a summer internship or an experienced professional clarifying your purpose, the growth mindset blueprint shown by the 2024-25 Philadelphia Eagles can be a “game-changer” in achieving your career goals.
