Handling the Uncertainty of Law School Waitlists

We’ve seen this before, but this time it’s especially true: it’s been a challenging law school admissions cycle. The applicant pool’s ~20% increase from last year has led to heightened competition, increased selectivity, and more applicants sitting on waitlists at their dream law schools.

Being on a waitlist can be frustrating and anxiety inducing. While a rejection might bring closure, a waitlist spot can feel like you’re neither here nor there and the future can feel uncertain. Know that being on a waitlist is not a reflection of your worth as a candidate. It’s true that law schools often (particularly this cycle) receive far more qualified candidates than they have room for in their class, so waitlists are an unfortunate necessity.

So, what can you do now? Most importantly, focus on what you can control. Have you continued to engage with schools you have a particular interest in attending? Have you sent LOCIs emphasizing your desire to enroll? Are there any significant work, academic, or volunteer achievements or initiatives you can share?

Remember: this is a challenging, but temporary, time in the process.
