As you reap the well-earned rewards of summer—vacation, warm weather, a reprieve from coursework or teaching—the last thing you probably want to do is think about job searching. But for PhDs and postdocs, the job search process can last up to a full year—which means early preparation is your best shot at avoiding stress down the road.
The good news is: Career Services is here to help you take those essential first steps, whether you’re applying for faculty jobs, non-faculty jobs, or both. Join us August 6–13 for the PhD Job Search Prep Camp, a week-long series of workshops and faculty/alumni panels designed to give you the resources, skills, and confidence to tackle both the academic and non-academic job markets.
Confused about what you want to do with your life? Worried about your research funding? Trying to figure out how to be more competitive on the job market? The PhD Job Search Prep Camp will address these questions and more, helping you find opportunities that align with your skills, interests, and values and present yourself as the strongest possible candidate for those roles. Our presenters will guide you through each step of your search, from evaluating different kinds of employers and job postings, to understanding job search timelines, to crafting your application materials. Programs include:
- Workshops on academic job materials (CV, cover letter, research statement, teaching statement)
- Panel discussions with recent faculty hires
- Info sessions on finding and applying for research grants and postdocs
- Workshops on assessing your skills, interests, and values—and finding career paths that align with those results
- Guidance on networking with PhD alumni
- Step-by-step instructions on how to turn your academic CV into an industry resume
- Conversations with PhDs who have launched successful careers outside of academia
- An in-person writing studio to help you make tangible progress on your job materials
- …and more!
We know there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world right now—but you don’t have to navigate that uncertainty alone. Attend the PhD Job Search Prep Camp from Aug. 6–13 to take control of your job search, make strategic, well-informed plans, and feel more optimistic about your professional future.
