Are you planning to start law school right after finishing college? The “KJD” route, or Kindergarten –> JD is the term for going straight from high school to college to law school (without a break). This might be a good option for some, but for many, taking time between college and law school is the better option. How do you know what’s right for you?
What are some pros of KJD?
-You stay in the student “groove”. Some folks appreciate the momentum that comes with staying in the academic mindset. It can make the transition to law school a bit easier if you’re already in the habit of writing papers, studying, and juggling schoolwork along with other life responsibilities.
-You’ll likely start your legal career faster. Are you absolutely certain that the legal field is where you belong? Then KJD may help you get there sooner.
What are some reasons to not go KJD?
-You might just want a break! Law school can be demanding and highly rigorous. Taking time to recharge before diving back into academic life, with renewed motivation and focus, can better set you up for success.
-Are you still exploring your interests? If you’re at all unsure about law school, taking some time to figure things out is a good idea. Law school will still be there if/when you’re ready to go!
-Many law schools look for some kind of real-world experience in applicants to ensure richer classroom discourse. Whether you spend time working or volunteering, you’re sure to sharpen the skills law schools look for. These experiences can also help you stand out!
-Law school is expensive! Spending time earning some money is a really valid reason to not go KJD.
Everyone’s path to law school is different – what’s right for one applicant is not always right for another! Still unsure if KJD or a gap year (or years) is the right path? Schedule an appointment with one of the pre-law advisors! We can help you weigh your options and decide what’s right for you.
