Olivia DiRienzi, COL ’26, Philadelphia, PA
This summer, I had the opportunity to intern with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), an experience that gave me valuable insight into the critical role this agency plays in enforcing federal anti-discrimination laws in the workplace. I supported the legal and investigative teams by processing attorney-drafted charges of discrimination, conducting intake interviews, and drafting formal charges based on public inquiries. I also assisted with Priority Charge Handling Procedures (PCHP) reviews, which taught me how cases are evaluated and prioritized based on their merit and potential impact. These responsibilities allowed me to see firsthand how the EEOC’s work directly affects individuals seeking justice and fairness in employment.
One of the most meaningful aspects of my internship was collaborating with the investigative staff. By helping to review evidence and assess case merit, I learned how complex and nuanced discrimination cases can be. Each case told a unique story, and I gained a deeper appreciation for the balance between empathy and objectivity that is necessary to conduct thorough and fair investigations. The experience sharpened my ability to analyze information, communicate clearly, and stay organized while managing multiple ongoing tasks. It also reinforced my interest in pursuing a career where law, advocacy, and public service intersect.
This internship not only expanded my understanding of employment law but also gave me a clearer sense of the impact that federal agencies can have on individual lives. The work done by the EEOC serves as a reminder that promoting equity in the workplace is an ongoing effort that requires diligence, collaboration, and compassion. Moving forward, I plan to carry the skills and lessons I gained this summer into my academic and professional pursuits, with the goal of continuing to contribute to initiatives that promote fairness and access to justice.
