Worried about your anxiety or nerves getting in the way of a job interview? Interview anxiety is common (and natural), but there are some things you can do to improve your performance. The goal isn’t to eliminate nerves completely, but to channel them into focus and energy. Here are a few strategies to keep in mind as you prepare:
1. Reframe Anxiety (Same Energy, Different Label)
Anxiety and excitement feel very similar physiologically (fast heart rate, alertness). Instead of thinking: “I’m nervous. I might mess up”, shift to: “My body is getting ready to perform.” This simple reframe reduces the “threat” response and builds confidence.
2. Prepare Strategically (Not Excessively)
Over-preparing can actually increase anxiety. Instead, focus on preparing 5 or 6 core stories; use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Have stories ready for:
- A challenge you overcame
- A conflict you handled
- A leadership example
- A failure and what you learned
- A success you’re proud of
- A time you worked under pressure
Preparation builds certainty — and certainty reduces anxiety.
3. Use a 5-Minute Pre-Interview Routine
Right before the interview:
1️⃣ Box Breathing
- Inhale 4 seconds
- Hold 4 seconds
- Exhale 4 seconds
- Hold 4 seconds
Repeat 4–6 times.
This calms your nervous system quickly.
2️⃣ Power Posture
Stand tall, shoulders back, chin level. It signals confidence to your brain.
3️⃣ Quick Mental Script
Say internally:
- “They want me to succeed.”
- “I don’t need to be perfect.”
- “I just need to be clear.”
4. Slow Down During the Interview
Most anxious candidates may tend to speak too fast, over-explain, and/or apologize unnecessarily. Become comfortable with pauses before answering – it’s okay to say, “That’s a great question. Let me think for a moment.” Pausing makes you look thoughtful—not unprepared.
5. Reduce the Pressure
Remember: an interview is a conversation, not an interrogation. You are also evaluating the recruiter / prospective employer; one imperfect answer will not ruin your chances. Most interviewers are rooting for you.
