Recruiting Season Is Coming — Here’s How to Stay Well Through It

Fall recruiting can feel like a sprint before it even begins. Deadlines stack up, networking events fill your calendar, and the pressure to land the “right” offer can weigh heavily. But your wellbeing isn’t something to put on hold until the process is over.

  1. Start early, but pace yourself. Research firms and roles before fall hits. Register for the fall career fairs and follow the Penn Handshake collection for employers coming to campus.
  2. Treat rejection as data, not identity. Not every first-round interview leads to an offer. That is okay! Each conversation builds confidence and clarity about what you actually want. Track your recruiting activities on a spreadsheet.
  3. If you receive an offer, pause before deciding. It can feel like relief disguised as a decision. Think critically about culture fit, growth potential, compensation, and whether the role genuinely aligns with your goals. Reneging on an accepted offer may feel like a quick fix, but it damages professional relationships and we (Career Services) always hear about it from the employer. Come see us first if you’re considering reneging. The best long-term strategy is making a thoughtful, informed decision the first time.
  4. Protect your non-recruiting time. Sleep, movement, and time with friends are critical. I recommend blocking time on your calendar and treating recruiting like seminar.

Recruiting is a season. It ends. Your health continues well beyond it.
