Behind the Book works in NYC public schools, providing rich, innovative literacy programs to Title 1 classrooms. Working with students from Pre-K to 12th grades, Behind the Book identifies culturally responsive books and partners with teachers to create immersive programs that bring the authors of those books into classrooms. Through a series of workshops, authors discuss their book and teach a genre of writing, encouraging students to see themselves as readers and writers. Behind the Book seeks program interns to assist with the design, implementation and administration of our programs. The Program Intern will work closely with the Director of Programs and the Program Coordinators to support all aspects of our school programs. The position is based in our Harlem office but will be virtual until further notice. The commitment is for one semester, three days per week, hours are flexible.Program Intern responsibilities will include ● Working with students in classrooms● Managing the Behind the Book library; conducting research and managing review copies ● Assisting with student book publication as needed ● Assisting in managing program logistics and administration● Assisting in creating lesson plans, activities and worksheets ● Assist in creating videos to support learning ● Support coordinator with recording of lesson and forms during virtual workshops The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, eager to learn, and able to manage tasks independently. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required as are strong computer skills in Microsoft Office. An interest in literacy or previous tutoring experience a plus.
