The Center for International Policy (CIP) is now accepting applications for summer 2021 interns for its four programs (FITI, ASP, Africa Program, and SAM) and its Development/Communications team. All descriptions are below. Please read each carefully and submit an application directly to the email address specified under the program for which you are applying.

Foreign Influence Transparency Initiative (FITI)/Arms and Security Program (ASP)

The Foreign Influence Transparency Initiative (FITI) traditionally selects two interns, one whose time is split 50/50% with the Arms & Security Program (this is the only intern chosen for the Arms & Security Program) and one whose time is 100% dedicated to FITI. These interns will gain an understanding of Pentagon spending, the global arms trade, nuclear weapons policy, and the ways in which foreign governments seek to influence U.S. foreign policy. Candidates should have an interest in these issues as well as strong research and writing skills. Full-time interns will receive a nominal stipend of $1,000 per month; part-time interns will have their stipend prorated.

Duties

  • Helping to research and create a database on the various tools used by foreign governments to attempt to influence U.S. policy
  • Research for op-eds and blog posts as needed
  • Research on U.S. policies relating to arms transfers to the Middle East, including consequences of U.S. sales in the region, and statistical research on major arms suppliers
  • Research on foreign governments lobbying for, or against, arms sales to the Middle East
  • Research on the activities of the nuclear weapons lobby, including research on the economic impacts of nuclear weapons bases and campaign contributions by nuclear weapons contractors
  • Conduct primary research on Pentagon contractors and the economic impacts of Pentagon spending for reports and policy briefs

Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Ability to work with and interpret primary documents
  • Basic skills at analyzing statistics, including familiarity with Excel
  • Interest in/knowledge of the issues, policies, and political actors
  • Attention to detail, excellent writing skills

AFRICA PROGRAM

Research Intern

This intern will have the unique opportunity to work with CIP’s newest program focused on Africa. The intern will not only gain an understanding of US policies towards Africa, their impact on the region, and alternative approaches to critical issues there, but help develop the Africa Program itself. Candidates should have an interest in African countries as well as strong research and writing skills. Full-time interns will receive a stipend of $1,000; part-time interns will have their stipend prorated.

Duties

  • Compile background information for op-eds and blog posts as needed
  • Conduct research on U.S. policies and attitudes towards to Africa
  • Attend Congressional Hearings and NGO meetings on relevant subject matter
  • Compile and update database of statistics for countries and regions within Africa
  • Track US security, development and humanitarian assistance in the region
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Ability to work with and interpret primary documents
  • Interest in/knowledge of key issues, policies, and political actors
  • Attention to detail, excellent writing skills
  • Demonstrated familiarity with foreign policy issues relating to Africa
  • Strong research skills
  • Graduate student preferred.

  • Help communicate the outputs that the Research Intern and Africa Program work on
  • Attend Congressional Hearings and NGO meetings on relevant subject matter
  • Create communication outputs like tweets, infographics, newsletters, etc.
  • Support research efforts as needed
  • Other duties as needed related to communications

Security Assistance Monitor (SAM)

The Security Assistance Monitor (SAM) is a program of the Center for International Policy focused on enhancing transparency and oversight of an increasingly central U.S. foreign policy tool: U.S. foreign military and police aid and arms sales. By providing comprehensive security assistance and arms transfer data through independent, data-driven research, we seek to inform and elevate the debate among civil society, journalists, scholars, and policymakers about the best use of U.S. security assistance to improve human security.

Multiple positions are available with the Security Assistance Monitor program. Full time interns will receive a $1,000/month stipend; part-time interns will have their stipend prorated.

As an intern with SAM, you will be an integral part of the program and have the opportunity to participate in many types of project related activities ranging from supporting the SAM website database to contributing to research and/or content for our blog, fact sheets, policy briefs, reports, and social media. You will also have the opportunity to do independent research with an eye to publication under your own name. In doing so, you will gain a better understanding of international security and U.S. foreign policy interests worldwide.

Duties

  • Provide in-depth research on arms sales and security sector assistance topics, drawing on your own thematic or geographic expertise, to contribute to SAM reports, factsheets, opinion pieces and issues briefs.
  • Track U.S. government statements and actions, cover security news of the region and analyze government and think-tank reports
  • Write blog posts
  • Attend and take notes at relevant events and Congressional hearings
  • Contribute to Security Assistance Monitor’s social media platforms
  • Conduct independent research on topics of your choice, with the aim of developing your own publication (factsheet, issue brief, blog post, opinion piece)
  • Assist Security Assistance Monitor staff members with ad hoc assignments and administrative duties as needed
  • Maintaining social media presence and highlighting Security Assistance Monitor’s work on Twitter and Facebook accounts
  • Tracking social media and website analytics
  • Working with the staff to help create posts for Twitter and Facebook, media advisories, and email blasts
  • Tracking media hits and developing and maintaining a comprehensive media list
  • Create infographics and charts to highlight our research and analysis
  • Upload data and content to the SAM website

Qualifications

  • Inter positions require a self-motivated detail oriented person with excellent writing, oral communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Applicant must be an enthusiastic team player, a self-starter, and must have a demonstrable interest in international affairs and human rights who can capture current events and information into engaging content for our email lists and social media
  • Demonstrated knowledge of/interest in specific region and security
  • Highly developed research and writing skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to conduct in-depth internet research
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies/computer programs
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and Excel
  • Regional language skills desired
  • Familiarity with running social media accounts, and knowledge in creating infographics and images to convey data is valued

Development/Communications

The Development and Communications internship is a combined role that will provide you with highly employable and in-demand skills related to writing, editing, and graphic designing; fundraising and development; and database, social media, and website management. You will work closely with CIP’s President/CEO and Communications Associate. This internship will give you first-hand experience with nonprofit fundraising, operations, and communications. Full-time interns will receive a stipend of $1,000 per month: part-time interns will have their stipend prorated.

Duties

  • Research grants, foundations, funding opportunities, and fundraising strategies
  • Assist the Communications Associate in coordinating logistics for any board meetings
  • Maintain and update CIP’s donor database
  • Assist with fundraising campaigns and communications outreach through direct mail and email
  • Send acknowledgment letters and tax receipts to donors
  • Help plan fundraising events
  • Assist the Communications Associate in maintaining CIP’s social media and online presence
  • Format program outputs and assist in preparing promotional materials
  • Assist the Communications Associate with communications logistics
  • Other research, writing, and administrative duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for CIP’s mission of promoting peace, justice, and sustainability
  • Familiarity with the nonprofit world, or a desire to learn about it
  • An interest in gaining communication, development, fundraising, event planning, and database experience
  • Initiative, a positive attitude, commitment to deadlines, and strong attention to detail
  • Prior experience with Adobe Cloud (especially InDesign), professional social media, Google Drive/Docs/Sheets, Excel, mail merge, databases, website management, copyediting, and/or fundraising is a big plus
