Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc. was founded in 1976 to present the kinds of art the world isn’t quite ready for. We are a small organization in residence at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and have had great success working with university student interns. There are many opportunities for unpaid Internships in archival practice, website design; working with artists; fundraising; arts education; general administration, and more. After Interns become familiar with the Furnace and its diverse activities, they may request time to work on a special project of their own design.
All we require is a burning desire to work with contemporary art. Knowledge of word processing (Microsoft Word) and HTML and/or web site construction experience helpful but not essential. Previous arts administration and/or archiving/cataloguing experience useful. Knowledge and/or course work in contemporary art history a plus. We offer a rare opportunity to work closely with the staff of a vital avant-garde organization, a chance to get an insider’s view while providing much-needed assistance for our continued growth.
Since its inception in 1976, Franklin Furnace has boldly presented performance art, temporary installations and other forms of temporal art. Ida Applebroog, Eric Bogosian, David Cale, Willie Cole, Karen Finley, Guillermo Gomez-Peña, Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Tehching Hsieh, Theodora Skipitares, Michael Smith, Annie Sprinkle, Krzysztof Wodiczko, and Paul Zaloom are among the many artists first presented in New York by Franklin Furnace. Franklin Furnace also functioned as an artist book archive until 1993 at which point our collection of 13,500 works was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art to form the Museum of Modern Art/Franklin Furnace/Artist Book Collection. Franklin Furnace supports performance artists with the Franklin Furnace Fund grant program.
