OFFICE AND BLOOMBERG SCHOOL OVERVIEW

The Office of External Affairs encompasses three teams: 1) Communications and Marketing; 2) Development and Constituent Relations and 3) Finance and Administration.

The award-winning Communications and Marketing team provides strategic communications, external and internal communications and marketing services for the School across a variety of digital, print and physical platforms. This includes brand and identity management, digital strategies and web services, editorial and content strategies, visual communications, media and public relations, social media and integrated marketing campaigns.

General Summary/Purpose

The Communications and Marketing team of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is looking for a minority student intern to join the team in a part-time capacity for the 2020-2021 academic year (fall and spring semesters), and serve as a cross-platform writer across the School’s publication channels. The goal of this role is to provide an opportunity for a motivated student to gain editorial experience and to bring a diverse perspective to our work, specifically that of a young minority person in the U.S. today.

The Student Intern will work up to 8-12 hours per week to pitch and produce articles for the School’s website, magazine, and other efforts as agreed upon. Our articles focus on delivering the expert insights of our faculty on public health topics, including COVID-19, racism, health equity, and other public health issues and learnings. The position will report to the Associate Director, Editorial and is part of the larger Communications and Marketing team within the Office of External Affairs. The Communications and Marketing team also includes strategy, design, web, and audience engagement teams.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Pitch article ideas to the editorial team

• Shape article ideas from pitch to execution, including conducting interviews with faculty, students, and others

• Write 1-3 articles per week to be published on JHSPH.edu channels

• Work closely with other team members on accompanying assets and content including images, graphics, social posts, and spin-off content ideas

• Copy edit articles and content on occasion

• Help with other projects across the team on occasion, such as internal communications and digital production tasks as needed

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

Two (2) years of college coursework.

Some related experience.

Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the * JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

A writing sample relevant to this position should be submitted along with resume and cover letter.

• A writing test will also be required for the final candidate(s).

Preferred Qualifications

• 2 years of college coursework, preferably in English, communications, journalism, public health, science, or other related field.

• Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program at a historically black college or university (HBCU)

• Preference will be given to local students in the Baltimore area

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Experience writing according to a style guide, such as the AP Stylebook or an inhouse style guide, is a plus.

• Some related experience in writing and communications roles within degree program or as part-time work or internships, including experience conducting interviews.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Proficient knowledge of style and grammar rules

• Strong organization skills and attention to detail

• Ability to manage deadlines for assignments in different phases of completion

• Proven ability to synthesize and simplify complex, scientific, or technical information

• Demonstrated versatility in a variety writing styles, including short- and long-form articles, Q&As, social posts, etc.

• Experience with digital publishing platforms, such as WordPress, Drupal, MailChimp, and current social media channels

Ability to work remotely during the fall semester and until on-site work is permitted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

• The ability to work remotely during the entire internship may also be considered upon request.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
