New Castle County Department of Community Services is seeking an intern to work in a Victorian-era stone mansion museum which previously belonged to Joseph Shipley and the Bringhurst family. Rockwood Museum’s collection includes an exceptional selection of period garments dating from the early 19th Century through the mid-20th Century. The garment collection at Rockwood has gone through the accession process but has never been formally cataloged. A catalog of the garment collection at Rockwood would be a great asset to the interpretation and history of the museum. This collection is complimented by Rockwood’s photograph and document archive which is now a part of the archival collection at the University of Delaware.
This position is ideal for anyone interested in fulfilling a career in museums, non-profits, government agencies, marketing, research, or anyone who has an interest in history. This opportunity provides anyone studying art history, museum studies, architectural preservation, fashion and attire design, history, marketing, or research an opportunity to gain access to local history.
The intern will help evaluate the collection, work in collection storage completing condition reports, and photographing objects. Assist in organizing objects for exhibits, enter information into PastPerfect database, and assist in historic research if required. Other duties may include helping to organize special events.
This is an exciting opportunity which will provide the ideal candidate with hands-on experience of American furniture, art, historic clothing, changing exhibits and ongoing historical research.
Additional requirements:
The ideal candidate must be able to lift 25 lbs. or more (examples of items include chairs, sofa, large wall mirrors etc.).
Strong verbal communication required. Computer and administrative skills a welcomed plus but not required as training will be provided.
This position is ideal for anyone wishing to intern during the fall, winter, or spring months.
The position is on-site and has a flexible schedule. Some weekend work may be required.
Students serving with the New Castle County Department of Community Services will have the opportunity to: Interface and network with the general public and a wide variety of public agencies and community organizations; participate in a variety of special events and activities for all ages; collect data and analyze program success.
