Seasonal and Full Time Student Internships

Theatre Administration, Production and Education

Open Stage is opening applications for in-person learning opportunities for students and aspiring arts professionals.

The staff will work with individuals to determine the best course of concentration and curate an educational experience that aids in the individual in becoming a more well-rounded, educated, and inspired theatre artist.

Three internship concentrations are available: Theatre Administration, Production, and Education.

Basic Requirements:

  • Applicants must be 18 or older to apply.
  • Summer Internships can begin as early as May 1, 2021 and run as late as August 31.
  • Ongoing internships are available past the summer and through the fiscal year – June, 2022
  • Applicants can apply for any date range that fits their schedule.
  • Ability to follow Open Stage’s Covid-19 sanitation and safety guidelines, including mask-wearing, hand-washing, and physical distancing

Compensation:

This is a stipend contract. Parking expenses covered. Housing and transportation assistance is not available at this time

Theatre Administration Internship

Daily Tasks

  • Assist with the cultivation of relationships with individual and corporate donors.
  • Learn industry best practices for annual fundraising, communications, and acknowledgements.
  • Learning grantwriting fundamentals.
  • Help prepare for in-person events, including The annual Open Stage Gala (culminating on June 17), the Annual Board Meeting (June 16), the Gala Cabarets (June 19-27) and weekly staff meetings.
  • Aid the department with research projects.
  • Practice proper techniques in writing marketing copy and press releases.
  • Develop skills in website design and development.
  • Carry out crucial administrative support, including filing, correspondence, and database management.
  • Provide excellent customer service to an audience of patrons, donors, and students.
  • Helm volunteer development and organization
  • Aiding in Social Media development

Qualifications:

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proofreading skills a plus
  • Basic knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, Google suite, and Adobe suite a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat
  • A passion for the arts.

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum of 20 hours/week
  • Maximum of 40 hours/week
  • Between Mondays and Fridays, 9am – 5pm
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend assignments. The specific days/hours will be discussed and determined by each department and based on individual availability.

Mentor: Brianna Dow (she/her), Development and Business Manager

Most of this internship will take place on location at Open Stage, located at 25 North Court Street.

Production Internship

*Note that the staff of Open Stage is planning outdoor, in-person classes and events beginning in late May, 2021, and in-person, indoor classes and events by October, 2021. We will be following CDC guidelines and follow regulations from our local government and health officials, so these plans are subject to change.

Daily Tasks

  • Assist with construction projects, including set buildout and facility improvement
  • Create and upkeep online production books for various on and offsite projects
  • Develop skills in TurboCAD, the drafting software used at Open Stage
  • Running technical elements for outdoor cabarets and/or taking on role of Stage Manager/ASM for these events
  • Assist with load-in and installation of the set.
  • Maintenance of equipment at Scene Shop and storage areas
  • Assist with setup and strike of technical elements and scenery
  • Assist in painting of scenery
  • Opportunities for various production design projects

Qualifications

  • Ability to take instruction and work independently
  • Ability to multitask
  • Willingness to work safely and thoughtfully in the theatre and in rental spaces
  • Clear Communication is a necessity
  • Woodworking and experience with power tools a plus
  • Experience with sound and lighting equipment and software a plus
  • Experience with Google Suite, Microsoft Suite and/or Adobe Suite a plus

Time Commitment

  • Minimum of 20 hours/week
  • Maximum of 40 hours/week
  • Available hours – Mondays and Fridays, 8am – 6pm
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend assignments. The specific days/hours will be discussed and determined by each department and based on individual availability.

Mentor: Chris Gibson (he/him), Production Manager and Technical Director

Most of this internship will take place on location at Open Stage, located at 25 North Court Street. Offsite projects will require travel to various locale around the Harrisburg area.

Education Internship

Daily Tasks:

  • Aid Instructors in daily classes with theatre students ages 8-18
  • Development in daily and weekly class structure and curriculum
  • Leading daily warm-ups and exercises
  • Research on Theatre History, Acting Techniques, and Production Development and codifying it for students ages 8-18
  • Developing blocking and choreography alongside character development for individual, small and large groups of students
  • Aiding in communication with students, as well as parents and guardians about changes in schedule, as well as issues that may arise in the class
  • Daily updates on social media

Qualifications:

  • Experience in working with adolescents is essential
  • Experience in development of educational curriculums
  • Knowledge of Musical Theory a plus
  • Organizational and multi-tasking skills are essential
  • Maturity, good judgment
  • Ability to work under stressful circumstances
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Detail-oriented, focused work ethic
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and proactively
  • CPR and First Aid Certification a plus
  • Reliable transportation is essential
  • Basic knowledge of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat

Most of this internship will primarily take place at Italian Lake (located in Uptown Harrisburg), Reservoir Park (Downtown Harrisburg), and Open Stage, located at 25 North Court Street. Occasional offsite events will take place over the summer.
