Are you passionate about helping young people bring their creative ideas to life? Our K-8 school in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood of Philadelphia is looking for volunteers (“Maker Mentors“) to support student projects in our makerspace, the Wildcat Workshop.
Maker Mentors provide small group support for projects such as:
- Short documentary or website created by a team of grades 5-8 students for the National History Day competition
- Science fair projects undertaken by individual grade 4-5 students for the Carver Science Fair
- News videos or podcasts made by a team of grades 5-8 students in our WHYY Media Lab program
- 3D printed and laser cut designs made by students in grades 1-8
- Various making, tinkering, and engineering projects in all grades
We offer flexible scheduling based on the school day. Available time slots include, but are not limited to:
- Mornings: Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM (one or more days a week)
- Afternoons: Tuesday – Thursday, 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM (one or more days a week)
- Times throughout the school day that work for your schedule
Even if you’re not an expert in video editing or 3D design, our makespace is for learners of all ages. We’re seeking volunteers enthusiastic about fostering curiosity and practical skills (e.g., persistence, problem-solving, project management) in students. Successful Maker Mentors will possess:
- A passion for learning: You’re excited to explore new tools and concepts alongside enthusiastic young learners.
- Research proficiency: You have experience with various research methods, including finding reliable sources and analyzing data.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills: You can clearly explain ideas, offer constructive feedback, and help students overcome challenges.
- Patience and adaptability: You can work effectively with students of varying ages and skill levels.
All volunteers must have complete and up-to-date clearances on file with the School District of Philadelphia.
