The Community Engagement Internship provides funding to Penn undergraduate students to support summer internships at our selected community partner organizations.
HIAS PA provides legal and social services to immigrants, refugees and asylees. The Matching Grant (MG) program offers employment-focused services and intensive case management support for eligible refugees. The types of support offered through the MG program can include resume writing, job application support, and interviewing preparation, in addition to job placements and employer outreach.
HIAS PA Responsibilities
-Support clients one-on-one with resume development and other job-readiness skills.
-Guide clients in the effective use of online and in-person job search platforms, such as Indeed, and aid them in submitting job applications based on their skills and experiences.
-Co-facilitate group Employment Cultural Orientations, including lessons on How to Look for a Job, US Work Culture, Job Interview Practice, and Workers Rights.
-Reach out to potential employers around the city via email and phone calls, explain the refugee program, and gather information about job openings to refer potential clients.
*The collaborative and interrelated environment of HIAS PA means that interns may work on projects not listed here, or support the work of other teams at HIAS.
Technology Access Intern
The effects of the pandemic have increased the need for technology access; the technology intern will assist in managing HIAS PA’s client technology requests and connect clients to available resources.
-Manage HIAS PA’s client technology needs, including assisting clients with chromebook introductions, as well as connecting clients with Internet Essentials, a low income internet provider.
-Work collaboratively to develop agency-wide Standards of Procedure for addressing client technology needs.
At Civic House, the selected students attend every other week social justice workshop meetings with the other interns. During these meetings, students explore aspects of their identity, the root causes of social justice work, and engage in reflection to develop critical consciousness with a cohort of students interning at other organizations.
