Career Insights: Leveraging Your Doctoral Experience in Student Services Roles

Are you a PhD student interested in non-faculty career paths? Do you enjoy working with students, developing programs, and engaging with diverse stakeholders? Then a career in Student Services might be a good fit for you.

Student Services (also known as Student Affairs) offers an opportunity to continue supporting and mentoring students outside of the faculty space. As a PhD candidate, your research, teaching, and service experiences are absolutely relevant to Student Services positions. However, those experiences often need to be reframed or recalibrated so that hiring managers can clearly see your transferrable skills.

In this workshop, Carolyn Ureña (Director of Academic Advising, College of Arts and Sciences; PhD, Comparative Literature) and Ian Petrie (Director of Graduate Student Programming and Pedagogy, CETLI; PhD, South Asian History) will discuss how to reframe and leverage your doctoral experiences if you’re looking to pivot to roles in higher ed administration. They will offer actionable advice on which skills and experiences to prioritize in your job materials, how to tell compelling stories in interviews, and how to effectively compete with candidates who may have more direct Student Services experience.
