What Are Other PhDs Doing?

Assessing your skills, interests, and values is a key step toward identifying careers that may be a good fit—but it’s not the only way to approach career exploration. It’s also helpful to understand where other PhDs have ended up, and how they’ve leveraged their advanced training to pursue fulfilling careers across diverse industries. In this session, we’ll discuss where you can learn about the career trajectories of PhDs and postdocs in your discipline (and beyond), highlighting tools like Beyond the Professoriate, LinkedIn, and Penn’s own internal survey data. Participants will leave this workshop with a clearer sense of how to find PhD alumni working outside of academia, how to learn about others’ career trajectories, and how to leverage that information while exploring potential careers.
