Welcome to the Start of a New Year!

Welcome back!  One of the things I most enjoy about working on a college campus is the cyclical nature of the calendar with new beginnings holding lots of promise each semester. Attending convocation last week was a great way to celebrate the start of the new year and welcome the Penn Class of 2023.  We look forward to getting to know you!

The Career Services staff is particularly excited for the 2019-2020 academic year as we have several new initiatives launching this fall. First, we have a brand new website at https://careerservices.upenn.edu/.  We are thrilled to introduce this new platform in which students can join over 20 different industry communities and 9 affinity groups to receive very targeted information based on their specific interests.  So, for example, a student may opt in to the Healthcare and Engineering industry communities, along with the FGLI affinity community, to receive highly tailored emails highlighting specific information relevant to those interests.  Of course, the website also has a variety of “how to” channels such as “how to network” or “how to apply to graduate and professional school”.  We encourage you to log in to the site and set your preferences so that you will have this very tailored experience and newsletter moving forward. (To do this click on the “sign up” link in the top right corner.)

We are also exited to launch our new Peer Career Advisor (PCA) program.  We invite you to stop by the Career Services office (Suite 20, McNeil at 3718 Locust Walk) any weekday between 1:00 – 5:00 to get feedback on your resume and cover letters, as well as answers to your career-related questions on topics such as the job and internship search, Handshake, career fair prep, interviewing, and more! The Peer Career Advisors participated in training last spring and over the summer so are well prepared to help their fellow undergraduates.

Finally, just a reminder that we have many employer related events coming up in the next few weeks.  Employer information sessions have started and provide a great opportunity for you to learn more about various opportunities. On-campus interviewing for both internship and full-time opportunities will start on September 17th and you can submit resumes for many of those opportunities now. (Be sure to attend an “Intro To On- Campus Interviews” session to learn all the details you will need to know about OCI! Our CareerFIRE (Finance, Insurance and Real Estate) Career Fair will take place on September 5th, our general Career Link career fair is on September 6th, and our Engineering Career Days will be on September 10th and 11thHandshake is your resource to find out about all of our employer events (and to schedule appointments with Career Advisors!).  We look forward to seeing many of you during these first few busy weeks of the semester!
