PhD Career Exploration Fellow Spotlight: Julia Noll

Hosted by Merck

Describe your experience working with your host.

Dr. Marla Watts, from Merck’s Quantitative Biosciences Division, served as my host throughout my fellowship. Marla’s dedication and active involvement were truly remarkable. Right at the start of the program, she provided me with a comprehensive overview of Merck’s drug development process, ensuring that I gained valuable insights into the company’s operations. Moreover, Marla took a keen interest in my future career objectives. She generously offered to leverage her extensive network to arrange informational interviews with individuals who could help me further explore my interests. Introducing me to several colleagues, our conversations proved enlightening and allowed me to gain valuable perspectives. We maintained regular check-ins to discuss my thoughts and progress. Marla’s commitment to tailoring this fellowship experience to suit my specific needs and interests was exemplary.

What did you learn from this opportunity (about yourself, about career fields, the job search, etc.)?

My experience provided me with invaluable insights into the daily routines of scientists employed at a major pharmaceutical company. It granted me a remarkable glimpse into the potential trajectory of my own future career and ignited a profound inspiration within me to deliberately shape my path towards achieving my goals.

How does your CEF experience benefit your future career plans?

Participating in the CEF has significantly enhanced my networking capabilities and honed my skills in conducting informational interviews. By engaging with scientists who hold positions that align with my aspirations and attending the enlightening CEF workshops, my confidence in identifying a career that harmonizes with my skills and passions after completing my PhD has been greatly bolstered.

What was the most valuable part of your CEF experience?

The most invaluable aspect of the CEF experience was uncovering previously unknown career trajectories of scientists within the realm of big pharma. The opportunity to engage in one-on-one conversations with individuals occupying these positions proved to be immensely beneficial. Through these interactions, I not only acquired insights into their daily activities but also developed a sense of confidence in a professional environment.
