My Summer at BIMC

Tianchun Ni, Master of Public Administration, 2023

Over this summer from 6/15 to 8/15, the summer internship as a BIMC Policy and Special Projects Research Intern has provided significant value to my future career path. I am super grateful for the help from GAPSA funding to let me take the perfect opportunity to pursue my passion and gain the experience I need to make an impact in the field of public policy and administration. From delving into policy research to spearheading special projects, every step of this experience has been a profound learning opportunity.

In this blog post, I’ll share my thoughts, recount some fascinating anecdotes, and highlight the heartwarming stories of community support that made this internship truly unforgettable.

As a Policy and Special Projects Research Intern, my role extended far beyond just fetching coffee or making copies. From day one, I was entrusted with tasks that truly mattered – conducting policy research, analyzing data, and contributing to special projects that had a direct impact on the company’s operations. This level of trust not only boosted my confidence but also made me feel like an integral part of the team. The senior team members were always approachable and eager to guide me through challenges. One instance that stands out was when I was struggling with data visualization for a report. A senior analyst not only helped me master the necessary tools but also shared personal insights on effective data storytelling. This incident was a testament to the fact that a supportive community can propel individual growth. Alongside my policy research, I had the opportunity to help organize community workshops that focused on pertinent social issues. These sessions not only facilitated dialogue but also aimed to raise awareness about topics ranging from sustainability to digital literacy. Engaging with participants from diverse backgrounds highlighted the power of education in shaping informed and conscious citizens.

Throughout my internship, I found myself engaged in several interesting stories that not only made me smile but also imparted valuable lessons. One such incident involved collaborating with a diverse team of experts to devise strategies for political campaigns. I also witnessed the cooperation of UCA, NECAA, APAPA on the 114th NAACP in Boston. Through various initiatives, we also supported local schools by providing resources for underprivileged students. I had the opportunity to contribute by organizing a fundraising event that garnered significant participation from both employees and local businesses. My involvement in organizing a fundraising event for a local cause taught me the art of rallying support and channeling resources towards a common goal. Collaborating with colleagues, stakeholders, and local businesses, we managed to not only raise funds but also create a sense of community around a shared purpose.

As I wrap up my internship, I’m filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. This journey has not only enriched my professional skills but also imparted life lessons that I’ll carry forward. From navigating the intricacies of policy research to forging connections within a supportive community, this summer has been nothing short of transformative. As I step into the next chapter of my academic and professional journey, I do so with a heart full of appreciation for the experiences and opportunities that GAPSA Summer Funding and BIMC have provided me.

This is part of a series of posts by recipients of the 2023 GAPSA Summer Internship Funding Program that is coordinated by Penn Career Services. We’ve asked funding recipients to reflect on their summer experiences and talk about the industries in which they spent their summer. You can read the entire series here.
