October Hill Magazine seeks an intern to take on the functions of Assistant Short Story Editor. The Assistant Short Story Editor will work directly with the Short Story Editor and Managing Editor to read, assess, and edit new submissions for the magazine each quarter. The intern should have some degree of familiarity with copyediting, proofreading, developmental editing, and the ability to provide editorial critiques. Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style is a plus. No practical experience necessary. This internship will require 10 hours or less of work per week.
Now enjoying its sixth year in the literary marketplace, October Hill Magazine was created as a platform for new and aspiring authors of short stories and poetry. The magazine has since broadened its offerings to include photography and illustrations. We have plans to develop a print companion to our digital offering and are poised for future growth.
General Overview of Duties:
- Under the supervision of the Managing Editor, collaborate with the editors via Slack to determine publication schedule and assign submissions to review/edit.
- Attend and participate in short story editor staff meetings every two weeks. Be prepared to discuss comments/suggestions about short story submissions.
- Review/edit 5-10 short stories quarterly.
- Be an ambassador and champion of the publication to increase reach and bring in new authors.
