CO Nurse Practitioner
The Johns Hopkins University Department of Otolaryngology is seeking a CO Nurse Practitioner who will work in an outpatient clinical setting both independently (after a period of supervised training and skills acquisition) and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary health team focused on providing comprehensive care to adult and pediatric patients with ear disorders. Typical clinical scenarios will include hearing loss, meeting candidacy criteria for cochlear implantation. Assessing degrees of hearing loss, inner ear disorders of hearing and vestibular sensation (“balance”), acoustic neuroma/vestibular schwannoma, cholesteatoma, otitis externa, cerumen impaction and other ear disorders. This individual will be responsible for making independent decisions regarding patient care and must exercise professional judgment and decision-making.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
• Clinic-based evaluation and management of patients with symptoms of hearing disorders.
• Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively and efficiently with patients, patient family members and all members of the interdisciplinary health care team.
• Ability to competently perform (after a period of supervised training) clinic-based ear procedures requiring use of binocular ear microscopy and bimanual use of instruments in the ear canal.
• Ability to learn and apply knowledge of ear and neurotologic anatomy, physiology and disorders.
• Ability to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic and rapidly changing environment.
• Must be self-directed and possess mature judgment and motivation.
Communication
• Must be able to communicate clearly in spoken and written English.
• Must efficiently use the Epic electronic medical record system (after a period of training)
• High level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are also essential.
• Scientific writing skills are valued.
Additional Competencies
• The position is almost exclusively focused on otology and neuro-otology, and prior training and experience in these disciplines is highly desirable.
• Although not required, fluency in other languages such as American Sign Language, Spanish, Mandarin or Russian is advantageous.
• Must successfully complete all necessary Epic training courses and other applicable clinical software systems. Prior experience with Epic is advantageous.
• Must complete all required HIPAA and other specified online training courses.
• Other computer or other special needs for the position: Operates personal computer and/or laptop to access email, computerized scheduling and documentation databases, and other basic office support software.
• Must have current certification as a Nurse Practitioner by the State of Maryland.
• Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
Minimum Qualifications
• Master’s Degree in Nursing; Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner.
• Must be licensed as NP in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
• Must maintain current licensure and certification for the duration of employment.
• Additional experience may substitute for master’s degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
• Current American Heart CPR certification.
• High level of interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are also essential.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in care of surgical patients.
• Experience in the Johns Hopkins system strongly.
• Knowledge and compliance of HIPAA rules and regulations in the dissemination of patient Protected Health Information (PHI).
• Excellent communication, mathematical computation, spelling, and grammar skills.
• History of strong organizational skills, analytical skills, customer service skills, clinical sensitivity, medical terminology, excellent computer skills and the ability to multi-task.
• Experience with the EPIC system is a plus.
Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.
